let oneself go는 '열광하다'라는 뜻과 '느슨해 지다'라는 뜻이 있다.

A: Something urgent came up. I'm really sorry.
B: No problem. Let's do it another time.

B: Sounds great! Same time at the same place, right?

A: 금 막 보러 가려던 참이었는데요.
B: 여기 있으니 어서 말해보세요.
A: 죄송하지만 저녁 약속을 취소해야겠어요.
B: 무슨 일인데요?
A: 급한 일이 생겼거든요. 정말 죄송해요.
B: 문제없어요. 다른 때 만나죠.
A: 고마워요. 다음에 보상해 드릴께요.

위의 대화에서 사용된 make up to라는 표현은「∼에게 보상하다/∼에게 신세를 갚다」라는 의미로 사용되어 지키지 못하는 약속이나 잘못한 일에 대해서 후에 「보상하겠다」라는 compensate의 의미와 비슷하게 사용되었다. 이 외에도 make up to이라는 표현은 매우 널리 쓰이는 표현으로 상황에 따라 여러 형태로 응용해서 사용할 수 있다. 불만이 있는 손님에게 How can I make up to you?하면 「어떻게 보상/변상해 드릴까요?」라는 뜻으로 쓰인다. 참고로 make up with라고 하면 「∼와 화해하다」라는 의미로 John made up with Mary하면 「존과 메리는 화해했어요」라는 뜻이 된다.

Troublesome alliances

Dealing with reluctant allies is one of the most complicated challenges to the war on terror. 영문 에세이에서 앞에 나온 명사의 반복을 피하기 위해 우리는 대명사를 많이 쓰게 됩니다. 하지만 위의 문장에서 children 과 environments가 모두 복수로 쓰였기 때문에 다음 문장에서 they가 무엇을 지칭하는지 독자는 혼동 될 수 있습니다. Surroundings혹은 circumstances는 복수로 자주 쓰이지만, environment는 단수로 쓰이는 것이 바람직하기 때문에 children은 복수 대명사(they)로 environment는 단수 대명사(it)로 쓰는 것이 좋습니다.

To 부정사는 문장 맨 앞에서 주어로 쓰이기 보다는 가주어/진주어 구문으로 (It ~ for~to) 쓰이는 경우가 더 많습니다.

get down to business란 표현은 위의 경우에는 「본론으로 들어가자」라는 의미로 사용되었고 예를 들어 새 일을 시작할 때 let's get down to business하면 「일을 시작합시다」라고 할 수 있다. 참고로 「본론으로 들어가겠습니다」라는 표현을 하려면 Let's get right down to point.라고 하면 된다.

기본적인 수동태의 형태는 주어가 사람이나 사물에 대해 행동을 하는 것을 표현하기 보다는 사람이나 사물이 주어에 대해 행동을 당 하는 것을 표현하고자 할 때 주로 쓰이는 표현 방법이다. 수동태는 또한 동사를 행하는 주체 즉 주어가 확실하지 않을 때 사용되기도 한다.

one과 per라는 의미를 가지고 있는 부정관사 a나 an은 단수 명사에만 붙는 한정사이다. 뒤에 오는 단어의 첫 음절이 모음으로 시작되면 an을 쓰고, 자음으로 시작되면 a를 사용한다.

The shopper looked down on that clothing brand because it was inexpensive. She only buys expensive, name-brand clothing.

When someone looks down on someone or something, he thinks he is better or above that person or thing. In the first two examples, people who don't make a large salary and uneducated people are looked down on. In the last example, the woman shopper looks down on a certain brand of clothing because it is inexpensive. She thinks that it is not as good as other brands that are more expensive.

 어원

가끔 우리는 "돈 벼락을 맞고 싶다" 라고 합니다. 물론 벼락을 맞으면 돌아가시겠지만, 그 정도까지 많이 쌓여 있는 돈에서 헤매고 싶다라는 것이겠죠. 상상을 해 보세요. 돈이 산더미처럼 쌓여 있는 곳에서 뒹굴 뒹굴 굴러 다닌다면? 바로 그래서 rolling in it 이라고 하는 것 입니다.
간혹 어떤 이들은 "돈이 굴러들어 온다" 라고 하는 뜻으로 rolling을 쓰지 않았냐고 하더군요. 그렇게 생각할 수도 있습니다.
결국 같은 뜻이겠죠. Rolling in it은 "떵떵거릴 정도로 돈이 많다" 라고 해석하면 됩니다.
