Hub of Asia, Come to Seoul~ 이런 문구들만 보고 왔는데 막상 와보니 맨날 이건 양키고홈만 외치니 누가 좋아하겠습니까? :)

I have only been in Korea for four months, and my overall impression of the countryis a good one. It is a very modern, forward-moving place that may become a majorAsian city in the near future. As in every country, I have met nice people andrude people, open-minded people and narrow-minded people. The struggle I faceas an outsider is distinguishing between rudeness and cultural difference. Asan American, I grew up in a place of open spaces. There were times when I wasmiles away from the nearest person. I loved those times of 'aloneness', especially at night when my only other friends were the cool wind and the bright stars. Korea is a place full of people, and I expect nothing different on such a smallpiece of land. However, sometimes the crowds wear on my nerves. It's at times like these when I have to be careful not to misinterpret certain actions or attitudes of the Korean people around me. For example, on the subway people very often sit beside me for a few seconds, look at me then move to another seat. When I get off the subway, the move back to the spot where I was sitting To me (and most Westerners), this is very strange, and I am tempted to think it is because they dislike me. But then I remember (or try to remember) to take into account curiosity and fear. I think most Korean people are very shy and curious towards foreigners. What I may mistake as rudeness or racism, is, in fact, just shyness and curiosity combined. Of course, there are people in every country who are racist, but not the majority. My second month here, I was punched by an old, drunk, Korean man because he asked me if I was an American, and I foolishly said, 'yes'. The punch did not hurt, but the emotional feeling of being hit for no reason other than the country in which I was born hurt a lot. That incident tempted me to view all Koreans through the bitterness of that one man, and I have to fight this temptation almost every day. When people stare at me, I wonder if they are seething with hate towardsAmericans (and me). I recognize the bitterness many people in Korea feel towards the US, and I do not blame them. The American government has done more than its fair share of horrible things in Korea. I am an American who strongly disagrees with my government's position on many things, including the Iraqi war and most other wars we've been involved in. I do not want to be seen as a supporter of George Bush just because I am from America, but many people do not take the time to really get to know what I think or believe. My skin (and yours) says nothing about what I believe or how I think. I am looking forward to living in Korea for at least a few more years. I want to understand the people and the culture of this beautiful country, and I want Korean people to understand me. I want them to know that I respect them, their beliefs, and their culture. I want them to know that I am an anti-American government American. My experience so far has been good overall, and I know I will be a better person in the long run for living here.

I don't always send it but it makes me feel better just to write it. Jennifer, age 11 Writing to me is the kids' way of unloading what's on their minds. It's therapeutic. Writing can also be therapeutic for me. My brother tells me that every book I write saves me five years in therapy. I laugh about that but he could be right. Like most writers, when I began to write, I wrote out of my own needs. Writing was my way of dealing with and trying to make sense of life. It was my way of communicating. Writing for and about kids wasn't a conscious decision. I wrote what came naturally. I wrote about what was important to me. I wrote the kinds of books I wanted to read when I was young, books about real life and real feelings.

Last night, as I was surfing the internet, I accidentally came across some victim-based porn. Just watching the first few seconds of it gave me a sick feeling deep in my stomach, and it led me to ask the question “is there an absolute system of morality?” [Note: I realize this has nothing to do with living in Korea, but it’s important enough for me to share]. For a Christian and people of other faiths with morality systems, the answer is quite easy. They say, “Sure there’s an absolute system of morality, and it’s found in our sacred Scriptures.” As appealing as that answer sometimes is to me, there are too many contradictions and nonsensical morals in most religious systems. I have to answer this question as an atheist, and as an atheist, it is much harder to answer. If there is no God, no divinity who has set down rules to follow, how can there be an absolute, objective morality? On the other hand, if morality is subjective, rape, the Holocaust, and religious wars are all ok within the culture in which they take place. I cannot believe in this subjective morality, and my only reason for not believing it is the sick feeling I get by calling it subjective. So I must answer for myself how an atheist can have an objective morality, thereby being able to call victim-based porn (and other atrocities) evil. The only semi-satisfying answer I have been able to muster is what follows. We all come from apes, or ape-like humanoids, who had certain clan-based moralities to ensure survival and prime living conditions within that community. As the human “clan” became larger and more spread out territorially, this clan-based morality applied to a larger and larger group. Fast forward hundreds of thousands of years, and we come to today. Those of us who are enlightened see the world community as our clan, and, therefore, act civilly towards others and attempt to facilitate an environment which ensures our “family” survival and, conversely, the absence of suffering. It is an evolution-based morality that is rooted in survival. Because it is rooted in nature, and nature is objective, the morality is therefore objective. As a result, victim-based porn (and the other atrocities against individuals or humanity at large you may think of) is truly evil, and should be fought ^^ http://cafe.daum.net/danielpayne
