Dear Judy, 
 Whenever I have a fight with somebody I sit right down and write a letter to you. I 
don't always send it but it makes me feel better just to write it.

Writing to me is the kids' way of unloading what's on their minds. It's therapeutic. 
Writing can also be therapeutic for me. My brother tells me that every book I write 
saves me five years in therapy. I laugh about that but he could be right. Like most 
writers, when I began to write, I wrote out of my own needs. Writing was my way of 
dealing with and trying to make sense of life. It was my way of communicating. Writing
for and about kids wasn't a conscious decision. I wrote what came naturally. I wrote 
about what was important to me. I wrote the kinds of books I wanted to read when I 
was young, books about real life and real feelings.

conscious : 의식[자각]하고 있는, 알고 있는 
          : a conscious smile 이라고 하면 억지 웃음 말합니다. 
           그러므로 위 문장의 경우 아이들을 위한 글을 쓰는 것이
           억지로 짜낸것이 아닌 자연스런 욕구에 의한 것이었다는 의미겠죠? ^^
