[벤자민 프랭클린의 13가지 덕목 Benjamin Franklin's 13 Virtues]
1. 절제(Temperance) :
배부르도록 먹지 마라. 취하도록 마시지 마라.
Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.
2. 침묵(Silence) :
다른 사람이나 나에게 도움이 되지 않는 말은 삼가 한다.
즉 자타에 이익이 없는 말을 하지 마라. 쓸데없는 말은 하지 마라.
Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself ;
avoid trifling conversation.
3. 질서(Order) :
물건은 제자리에 두어라. 일은 정한 시간에 해라.
Let all your things have their places;
let each part of your business have its time.
4. 결단(Resolution) :
해야할 일은 과감히 결심하라. 결심한 일은 반드시 실행하라.
Resolve to perform what your ought;
perform without fail what you resolve.
5. 절약(Frugality) :
비싼 것은 사지 않고, 낭비하지 않는다. 즉 자타에 이익이 없는 일에는 돈을 쓰지 말 것.
Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself;
i.e., waste nothing.
6. 근면(Industry) :
시간을 아끼고, 불필요한 일은 하지 않는다. 유익한 일에 종사하고 무용한 행위는 끊어버려라.
Lose no time; be always employed in something useful;
cut off all unnecessary actions.
7. 성실,진실(Sincerity) :
남을 해치지 않고 속이지 말고, 편견을 버리고 공정하게 생각 해라. 모든 언행은 공정하게 하라.
Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly;
and if you speak, speak accordingly.
8. 정의(Justice) :
남의 권리를 침해하지 않고, 나의 의무를 다 한다.
Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits
that are your duty.
9. 중용(Moderation) :
극단적인 것은 피한다. 내게 죄가 있다고 생각하거든 남의 비난과 불법을 참으라.
Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries
so much as your think they deserve.
10. 청결(Cleanliness) :
몸, 옷, 집이 불결한 것은 결코 용납하지 않는다.
Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, or habitation.
11. 평정(Tranquility) :
사소한 일, 불가피한 일에 대하여 화나 짜증을 내지 않는다.
Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.
12. 순결(Chastity) :
건강한 자손을 위해서만 부부생활을 하라.
감각이 둔해지고 몸이 쇠약해지고 부부의 평화가 깨지고 소문이 나빠지도록 해서는 안된다.
Rarely use venery but for health or offspring,
never to dullness, weakness,
or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation.
13. 겸손(Humility) :
예수와 소크라테스를 본받고 배워라.
Imitate Jesus and Socrates.
