MINIATURE PORCELAIN DOLLS 
Carabosse dolls are craftsmanship creations made of porcelain and out of original moulds. They represent, 1/12 scale, ladies of different historical periods, characters of famous ballets and popular fairy tales.
The making of these dolls involves a long and complex process that begins with a first modelling in clay to obtain plaster moulds that will allow shaping the porcelain. After that, the pieces are polished with silk and baked at a a temperature over 1200ºC to achieve their total vitrification. The enamelling of the pieces is obtained by the application of three consecutive layers of enamel and baking them each time.
Their costumes, based on genuine patterns, are made of natural material such as organdi, different kinds of silk and fine cotton, wich are dyed and sewn by hand. They are also trimmed with hand-made embroidery, passementerie, bobbin lace, crochet... All the dolls wear either fabric shoes or leather ones with leather sole. PERIOD LADIES
  
  
  
These ladies, pieces of collection or inhabitants of doll houses, represent ladies of different historical periods, especially the 19th century. They are arrayed according to the fashion of their times. Their bodies are formed by porcelaine pieces and joined by means of stranded wire, wich allows motion.
Their costumes, as well as their hair style, shoes and complements, are the result of a thorough study on the fashion history. This study has been carried out through several sources: books of old illustrations, fashion magazines, photographs, pictures and collections of historical costumes in museums. 
CLASSICAL BALLET DANCERS
   
The ballerinas represent several characters of very known classical ballets such as Coppèlia, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, La Bayadère, Don Quixote, Paquita...
The design of the dresses is inspired by the costumes that the most important ballet companies (Royal Ballet of London, Ballet of the Opera National de Paris, American Ballet Theatre...) have used in their performances.

THE AUTHOR

Maria Jose Santos was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1972. She spent her early childhood in A Coruña. At the age of ten she moved to Asturias, a region where she has lived ever since. She studied in the University of Oviedo, where she took a degree in law. 
Maria Jose began the creation of dolls in 1997 after attending classes of reproduction of antique dolls, where she learned the classical technic of polishing, baking and enamelling of porcelain.

After several months of self-taught training in modelling moulds and confection of costumes, her first doll was a classical dancer, 1/10 scale. After that, she created new characters of famous ballets. Her customers were dancers and people fond of dance. 
The next step in her career as an artisan took place in the exhibition 'Casas de Muñecas y Miniaturas' in Oviedo where she presented a scene, 1/12 scale, of the ballet The Sleeping Beauty. In this exhibition she had the opportunity of meeting Caroline Hamilton, the organizer of London Dollshouse Festival, who selected Maria Jose to enter for it in 1999.
Encouraged by the reception of her work, Maria Jose participated in international fairs and exhibitions of miniatures and dolls: Paris Creation (France), Eins zu Zwölf (Germany), Feria Internacional de Miniaturas in Madrid (Spain), Philadelphia Miniaturia, Chicago International (USA), etc.
Her work has been published in magazines such as Puppen & Spielzeug (Germany), Maison de Pouppèe (France), Miniature Collector, Dollhouse Miniatures, Dolls in Miniature (USA) and in the Spanish ones Miniaturas and Muñecas. She has contributed to this latter since 1999 writing articles on fashion in the 19th century.
Several of her dolls can be seen in permanent collections and temporary exhibitions of European and American miniature museums.
Nowadays Maria Jose goes on creating dolls on order, teaching and working on new projects.
